If you’re planning to visit Bilbao in August, there’s one event you simply can’t miss: Aste Nagusia, or the Big Week of Bilbao – one of the most vibrant and authentic festivals in northern Spain. For nine days, the city transforms into a stage of music, food, culture and Basque tradition, with every corner bursting with festive energy. And from Hotel Sirimiri, right in the heart of the city, you’ll have the perfect base to experience it all… comfortably and on foot.
What is Aste Nagusia and when is it held?
Aste Nagusia, which means “Big Week” in Basque, takes place every year at the end of August. In 2025, the festival runs from 16th to 24th August. It kicks off with a lively opening speech and the launching of the traditional chupinazo from the Arriaga Theatre, marking the start of nine continuous days of celebration. One of the most iconic figures is Marijaia, the beloved symbol of the festivities. With raised arms and a permanent smile, she embodies the cheerful, inclusive and community spirit of Bilbao during its biggest week of the year.
Must-do experiences to enjoy Aste Nagusia like a local

Free concerts
From big-name artists to local bands, music takes over the city with open-air stages in spots like Abandoibarra, Plaza Nueva and Plaza Circular. And best of all? It’s completely free.
